In 1619, the Portuguese slave ship São João Bautista crossed the Atlantic Ocean with unusual cargo: African men, women, and children, bound for horrific lives of enslavement for generations to come. The history of oppression and disregard for African people’s human rights translates into systemic racism today, and it is a problematic issue that continues to plague Modern America. Nasiy Dabar Emiel Oz Ben Emmanuel, or better known as Mr. Wxrd, addresses through the efforts of Black Redeem.

Reparations for slavery are both the monetary and non-monetary resources provided to victims of slavery and their descendants. It is undeniable that the African-Americans’ oppression led to the loss of a wealth of opportunities and privileges that they could have otherwise enjoyed just as their white counterparts did.

Black Redeem is an organization dedicated to giving back the lost wealth of African-Americans due to the oppression they suffered in the racial divide. As part of their mission, they raise awareness on what reparations are and who are entitled to receive them. These reparations help African-American communities by providing resources that will enable them to stand in equal footing as their non-Black counterparts.

“The axe forgets, but the tree remembers,” as they say. The long history of oppression and the inhumanity of that time are facts that the oppressors’ descendants refuse to acknowledge. Raising awareness and educating the public on pertinent racial issues is essential to eradicate the oppression that persists during modern time.

Black Redeem acknowledges that socio-political issues urgently need to be addressed with meticulous treatment. Standard media outlets such as magazines may already have a broad audience, but innovation is the mother of progress, and thus Mr. Wxrd ingeniously utilizes fashion to forward his causes.

The Smooth Puppy Club is a clothing brand that actively campaigns the movements that he is devoted to. It plays a large role in raising awareness of the plight that African-Americans continue to face today. It creatively projects socio-political and economic issues to various audiences. Black Redeem and the Smooth Puppy Club are complementary in its efforts to augment the African-American community’s resources through reparations.

Another movement that Mr. Wxrd considers to be close to his heart is an Act aiming to provide African-American communities the compensation they deserve from the American government after years of oppression and generations of slavery. This movement is the Harvest Freedom Act, and the Black Redeem website links to the online petition to expedite this act. Descendants of the enslaved and the Native American Holocaust victims will have to pay nothing for the implementation of this act.

Nasiy Dabar Emiel Oz Ben Emmanuel is a man guided by a vision of an equal society. He is involved with many organizations, including the Club of New Jerusalem Foundation, Buying Back Our Communities logistics, and Friends of the African Union. With his expanding litany of philanthropic involvements, his work makes the world a better place for many people he encounters. Find out more about him and Black Redeem by visiting his website.
